Davinci Resolve training part 2 – Step by step study guide

In the second part of these series I’m extracting the steps of the tutorial “Introduction to Editing Part 2”

The idea again is that you follow the written steps and use your memory to practice what you’ve learned.

Editing part 2

  1. Open the project: Age of Airplanes Trailer
  2. Duplicate the AOA Trailer v1 timeline and rename it to AOA Trailer v2
  3. Open the duplicated timeline
  4. Add Tracks (below the first audio track)
    • Video x 0
    • Audio x 3 (Stereo)
  5. Make the tracks’ height taller
  6. Rename the new added tracks as follows
    • SYNC, VO, SFX, SFX, Music
  7. Color code all audio tracks as follows
    • SYNC → Lime
    • VO → Teal
    • SFX → Brown (both tracks)
    • Music → Olive
  8. Add voice over clips segments at each timecode
    • Clip → Segment → Insert at
    • HF VO1 → 01:25:25:11 – 01:25:30:02 → 08:15
    • HF VO2 → 01:02:39:11 – 01:02:43:15 → 01:00:32:04
    • HF VO2 → 01:02:53:06 – 01:02:58:20 → 01:00:36:04 (this goes at the end of the past insert)
  9. Disable Snapping (N)
  10. Move the last two voiceovers to 01:00:30:09
  11. Delete (ripple) the silence of the second part of the voiceover 2 (between 01:00:36:19 and 01:00:37:13)
  12. Insert the sound effects:
    • Define the in and out points directly in the timeline
    • SFX – Jet taxi
      • Track A3
      • AOA 01 (use x to mark the clip)
    • SFX- Prop
      • Track A3
      • AOA 08
      • Clip in: 01:00:51:22
    • SFX – Distant prop
      • Track A4
      • AOA 14
      • Clip in: 01:00:25:12
    • SFX – Light Wind
      • Track A3
      • AOA 07
      • Clip in: 00:01:11:01
    • SFX – Jet Take off
      • Track A4
      • AOA 02
      • Clip OUT: 01:00:18:05 (out)
    • SFX – Jet Take off
      • Track A4
      • AOA 12
      • Clip OUT: 01:00:16:20 (out)
  13. Insert the SFX – Overhead clip
    • Place the playhead in the timeline at 17:13
    • Select Track A3
    • Place the playhead 01:00:43:19 on the sfx
    • Do a replace edit
  14. Mute SFXs and the Music track
  15. Bring up the mixer and hide the media pool
  16. Change the track type to mono for the SYNC and VO
  17. Normalize the audio levels for the SYNC Clips (Independent to -9 db)
  18. Unmute all tracks and mute A1 and A2 and music
  19. Adjust the volume (drag the audio level from clips sfx prop, sfx distant and sfx light)
  20. Adjust the volume of the A3 and A4 tracks
  21. Add transitions fade in and out to all clips of SFX tracks
    • Lenghthen the clips begin and end to allow the transitions to overlap
  22. Make the last sfx larger so it overlaps with the credits
  23. Adjuts the volume of the sfx and music tracks so the sync and vo are audible
  24. add a couple of audio keyframes just before the credits and increase the music volume a notch
  25. Add video transitions (only to indicate a change of time or location)
    • Between AOA_02 and AOA_10 (select the edit + Ctrl T)
      • Style of that transition (in the inspector)
        • Edge wipe
        • Angle → -80
        • Border → 69
        • Feather the border
    • Between clips 08 – 14 – 07 – 12
  26. Add fusion title (simple underline lower third) to place on top of the video track at the begining
    • Adjust the title to the length of the clip
    • Text → BRIAN J. TERWILLIGER
    • Size: 0.122
    • Tracking: 1.0
    • Line controls:
      • Line thikness to 0.013
      • Color Red 1.0, Green 1.0, Blue 0
      • Color type: Horizontal
      • Second color make it orange
  27. Copy the title to the b-rolls portions
    • MALDIVES
    • SOUTH POLE
    • ALASKA
    • KENYA
  28. Preview with cinema viewer (Ctrl + F)
